Peru

Peru is the third largest country in South America – about three times the size of California. At one time the heart of the Inca Empire and a key region during the Spanish control of South America, Peru is now a country of diverse ethnic backgrounds and blended religions. Catholicism has played a major role in the culture and government since the Colonial period. Most Peruvians in the cities are Catholic, while many in the country practice a mix of Catholic and animistic beliefs based on their Incan heritage.

The physical poverty in this country is overwhelming. More than 50% of the population lives below the poverty line, many in makeshift homes thrown together of packing crates, woven plant material, and random pieces of plywood. These shantytowns are especially prevalent around Lima, as millions of people have left the impoverished highlands hoping for a better life in the capital city.

Though there are very few Evangelical Christians in Peru, many respond eagerly when someone shares the Gospel with them. There is a great hunger for truth and openness to the message of salvation in Peru right now, especially among the teenagers and young adults. The churches are growing rapidly. The time is right to share the Gospel in Peru!

The ministry opportunities are endless… teaching Bible-based children’s programs, street witnessing, encouraging fellow believers in Christ, training young Christians interested in ministry, assisting the poor through practical projects, teaching in schools, and visiting orphanages and hospitals. Will you share the Gospel in Peru and allow Jesus to use you to show His love and truth in this country that is so open and hungry for Christ?
