Jamaica

The third largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica is a land of stunning coastline and vibrant culture. Since Christopher Columbus first arrived on the island in 1494, Jamaica has changed from being a small island with a few plantations a to famous tourist destination known for its traditions of music, coffee production, Jerk chicken, and prolific agriculture.
Famous for more than culture, Jamaicans are the World’s Fastest People, boasting Olympic gold-medalists Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, and Veronica Campbell-Brown, who have become the craze of the nation and the world. Jamaicans take great pride in their rich country and culture, and are ready to give any visitor a warm and chatty welcome.
Unfortunately, not all is well on this sunny island. Jamaica is struggling. During recent years, Jamaica has faced high inflation, low economic growth, large national debt, rampant urban crime and five massive hurricanes which devastated the island. In an effort to lessen their inner pain and frustration, Jamaicans have turned to drugs, immorality, and violence in large numbers. It is reported that there are as many bars as churches, and there are a lot of both. 62% of Jamaicans claim to be Christian, but the percentage of those who live their Christianity is much smaller.
What Jamaica needs most is the power of Jesus to transform hearts, and authentic Christians to go forth spreading the good news of the genuine freedom and victory that comes through the Savior. Whether is be to unwed mothers in need of counseling and help or young poor boys in need of love, the types of ministry are endless and the door is open. Will you be there?
