Peace-Bearers in Turmoil

In a country plagued with massive drug trafficking problems and, in the past, the constant threat of guerrilla violence, the people of Colombia are in need of the peace Christ gives. With an evangelical Christian population of less than 4%, the opportunities to share Christ and His love are numerous. Global Encounters is thrilled to announce the unique ministry opportunity that has opened up in Colombia!

In just a few years, the children who have grown up with these worldly and violent influences all around them will be the leaders, the teachers, the workers, and the parents of tomorrow. What a chance to influence them with the love of Christ! Do you want to strengthen families? Perhaps your passion is to encourage pastors or to reach out to teens that grew up in a life of turmoil? Join the Colombia ‘12 team and prepare to watch God do great things in the lives of these people.

While Colombia has a reputation for drugs and military insurgents, the situation has improved dramatically during the last ten years, to the point that Bogota is now considered as safe as any other South American capital. However, we do not take safety issues lightly and we will be working with local pastors to make sure the team stays out of danger.

Team Activities

The team will be leading a number of children’s programs, including working at an orphanage for several days.. Other ministry projects may include discipling teens and teaching classes in schools in particularly poor areas. You never know what exciting opportunity the Lord will provide when you’re on one of these trips!

The purpose of the activities is to build relationships through which we communicate Christ’s love and truth. We will work in connection with local pastors and missionaries who know the area, know what is safe, and will help the team learn how to connect with the Colombian culture.

Training

Team members will receive training in the children’s program curriculum, coaching in sharing the Gospel, and basic instruction in the culture, history, and language of Colombia. You will return from this trip with a toolbox of ministry and cross-cultural communication skills that you can put to use anywhere. As you show Christ to others, you will also find that your relationship with Him will be challenged and strengthened. As you teach others of His love, your own experience of Him will take on whole new dimensions.

Team Leadership

Daniel Cavanaugh and Elizabeth Fox will lead the team. Both of them have years of experience leading mission teams and specifically working with teams in South America, including Colombia. In addition, Christina Dickson will be helping with the leadership as she teaches missions photojournalism to some photographers who will be joining the team.
