Ukraine 2010

Sights of Ukraine and staying warm

dsc_0225Today was our first official day here in Ukraine! After a decent night’s rest, we woke up to see an elderly lady walking her cow out to pasture. =)

Today was a day of sightseeing, and getting to know the people and culture of Ukraine. dsc_0287The areas surrounding Kiev are absolutely rustic and beautiful. Traveling into the city takes quite a bit of time. The buses are where you can get up close and personal with Ukrainians. If you don’t have a heart for these people by the time you leave the buses, you will after you leave the underground metro! It was quite an adventure.

dsc_0233We began by seeing Kiev from the warm heights of special museums and monuments. The most moving was the national museum where the four million victims of Stalin’s forced starvation are honored. We also walked through parts of traditional Kiev and wondered at the ancient-looking Orthodox Churches. As a sign of respect the girls bought head coverings in order to enter the church and it’s underground catacomb-like memorial of past priests. dsc_0303At the end we emerged into a beautiful garden. While touring these gardens, we noticed elderly women praying silently through the pathways. There are SO many faithful Orthodox worshipers. Their faithfulness was a direct challenge to us to be faithful and unashamed witnesses for Christ wherever we are.

The trip home was very warm. Ok… it was STICKY HOT! Once home we ate delivered pizza for dinner, which was a great reminder of the home we dsc_0399left. We are really blessed to be here and excited about what God will do. Please pray that God will continue to use us to the best of our abilities!

We’re here!

After a three hour delay in SFO, an eight and half hour flight over land and sea, an eighteen hour layover in London, a four hour flight to Kiev, a two hour wait in customs lines, and a one hour drive we arrived at our final destination (for now!) of Irpen Kievskya Oblast, Ukraine! All that to say, the whole team and every piece of luggage made it without any (major) problems. Praise the Lord! We will be posting more tomorrow with pictures! Thank you all for you prayers. Keep praying!

Love to all,
The Ukraine Missions Team 2010

P.S. it is REALLY hot here!!!
